Come Join us for a flatwater kayaking trip on the James River in search of the Atlantic Sturgeon during its’ spawning season! Paddlers of all experience levels are welcome and knowledgeable tour guides will guide us on our trip. Sturgeon migrate annually from the open sea to freshwater rivers to spawn before returning back to the sea. Sturgeon are one of the oldest fish species on Earth, dating back over 120 million years.
We will paddle to points along the river where sturgeon have been frequently spotted jumping out of the water. These massive fish, capable of reaching 14 feet in length and 800 pounds, played a crucial role in the survival of the Jamestown colonists and are a key indicator of the James River's health. The ever-growing population of sturgeon in the James can be attributed to the Clean Water Act of 1972, the 1974 ban on sturgeon fishing, and extended efforts from many organizations to help reduce pollution in our waterways.
